Increased security likely in Jalna District, India, through at least early September following Sept. 1 clashes. Exercise caution.

Warning

Event

Authorities are likely to maintain an increased security presence in Jalna District, Aurangabad Division, through at least early September following clashes that occurred on Sept. 1. Emerging reports indicate activists have been staging protests in the district since Aug. 29 to demand expanded legal rights for Maratha community members. On Sept. 1, clashes erupted amid a rally in the Antarwali Sarathi area when police used baton charges and reportedly fired live ammunition in the air as activists allegedly pelted stones at law enforcement officials; the incident has left at least a dozen people wounded. Incidents of arson have purportedly occurred along the Dhule-Solapur Highway. Related commercial disruptions were also reported in the Wadigodri area of Jalna on Aug. 31.

Related demonstrations of varying types are possible over the coming days. Potential gathering sites include government buildings, police stations, public squares, and thoroughfares. Officials will almost certainly monitor any such gathering that materializes as a precaution. Authorities may implement enhanced measures, including temporary public movement and telecommunication restrictions, depending on the severity of the perceived threat. Security personnel may also expand these measures to encompass additional areas if the violence spreads to any surrounding regions; on Aug. 31, a related protest reportedly occurred in neighboring Shahgadh. Additional clashes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Further associated localized transport and business disruptions are likely.

Advice

Exercise increased caution if operating in the impacted areas. Keep away from concentrations of security personnel. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Avoid all demonstrations. Confirm business appointments, transport reservations, deliveries, and road status. Do not check out of accommodations before confirming onward travel. Carry proper identification documents to present at security checks. Plan for possible business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
