India: Khasi Students' Union likely to stage protests in Meghalaya State through early October

Khasi Students' Union likely to protest in Meghalaya, India, through early October. Week-long road blockades to begin on NH-6 from Sept. 25.

Warning

Event

Activists affiliated with the Khasi Students' Union (KSU) are likely to stage protests in Meghalaya State through early October. The purpose of the action is to demand the government and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) make adequate repairs to the National Highway (NH)-6 in Meghalaya. As of Sept. 22, organizers have announced the following plans:

  • Sept. 23: Activists to reportedly hold a sit-in protest at an undisclosed location in the Khliehriat area of East Jaintia Hills District.

  • From Sept. 25: Demonstrators to commence a week-long road blockade protest campaign along NH-6 10:00-16:00 daily.

Additional gatherings of varying types are possible over the coming days. Potential gathering sites include NHAI offices, as well as other prominent government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares. The participation rate remained immediately unclear. KSU leaders may temporarily suspend or cancel their planned actions at short notice if they perceive the government to be meeting their demand. Authorities will likely monitor any such gatherings that materialize and maintain an increased security presence near the road blockades. Clashes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Transport disruptions are likely to occur, especially between Meghalaya and other neighboring states, in the event of a larger turnout. Associated localized business disruptions and shipping delays are possible.

Advice

Confirm transport, business, and shipping arrangements in advance through early October. Monitor trusted local sources concerning ongoing developments. Avoid all demonstrations due to possible violence. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
