Italy: Unionized transport workers move nationwide strike from Sept. 29 to Oct. 9

Unionized transport workers in Italy change nationwide labor action to Oct. 9; previously scheduled Sept. 29. Transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Unionized transport workers affiliated with the Basic Trade Union (USB) have rescheduled their planned 24-hour strike action to Oct. 9; it was previously scheduled for Sept. 29. However, organizers decided to change the date after the government ordered the reduction of the strike timeframe to four hours. The USB union is demanding higher wages and improved working conditions. Urban and interregional road and railway transport personnel plan to participate in the strike.

Ground transport disruptions are almost certain across the country. Such strikes typically feature widespread protests; heightened security is possible near any demonstrations that occur. Though violence is unlikely, low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Reconfirm all ground travel plans on the strike date. Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Allow additional time for all travel plans. Strictly heed all advice from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
