Nigeria: Nationwide protests over death of musician possible through at least late September
Further protests over death of young musician possible across Nigeria through at least late September
Event
Further protests over the death of a famous musician known as Ilerioluwa Aloba are possible nationwide, particularly in southern Nigeria, through at least late September. Even though police services have launched an investigation into the exact circumstances behind the musician's death, demonstrations have occurred in several areas in southern Nigeria, including Lagos on Sept. 18. Protesters gathered in the Ogun State capital Abeokuta on Sept. 19, causing traffic gridlock in parts of the city. A similar gathering has also been reported in Warri, Delta State. There are no reports of violence during the protests.
Security forces will likely deploy to monitor any related protest. Localized disruptions are likely near all gatherings; protesters may march along or block roads. Isolated clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid all protests. Plan for extra travel time near protest sites. Leave the area immediately at the first sign of security disturbances. Heed instructions from authorities.
