Nigeria: Union calls for nationwide strike Sept. 5-6

Union calls for a nationwide strike in Nigeria Sept. 5-6 with further action planned from Sept. 21. Protests likely.

Warning

Event

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for a nationwide general strike Sept. 5-6. The strike has been called over various issues, including high fuel prices and alleged anti-union activity by the government. If its demands are not met a further indefinite nationwide strike will be held from Sept. 21. The union has also threatened to embark on mass protests in Imo State in September to stop the alleged abuse of workers and to shut Air Peace (P4) airline and other airlines involved in alleged violations of worker rights. Further details regarding the Imo State- and Air Peace-related activities are unclear; however, related protests may occur in the Imo State capital, Owerri, and near the Air Peace headquarters in Lagos (25, Sobo Arobiodu Street GRA, Ikeja).

Should the strike proceed, disruptions are likely to various sectors across the country, including transportation. Striking workers could also hold rallies. These are likely in major cities such as Abuja and Lagos. Protesters could gather near major government buildings and march along roadways. Security personnel will almost certainly deploy to protest sites. Clashes are likely if demonstrators are overly disruptive, engage in acts of public violence, ignore police orders to disperse, or gather without requisite permission.

Advice

Reconfirm appointments and transport services before departure Sept. 5-6. Avoid all protests as a standard precaution. Prepare for employee absenteeism during the strike period. Liaise with trusted contacts if planning travel in Imo State over the near term. Heed instructions from local officials.
