North Macedonia: Activists to protest at Ministry of Health building in Skopje from 18:00 Sept. 11 over government misappropriation scandal
Activists to protest at Ministry of Health in Skopje, North Macedonia, from 18:00 Sept. 11. Heightened security, disruptions likely.
Event
Activists plan to protest at the Ministry of Health building in Skopje from 18:00 Sept. 11. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce perceived corruption following a scandal in which medicine from a state-run oncology clinic was misappropriated and sold on the black market. This is the second such protest following an event on Sept. 4 that drew large crowds and made an unscheduled march to the Public Prosecutor's office; a similar march to the prosecutor's office is possible.
Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely near the protest site; similar disruptions are possible near the Public Prosecutor's office if a march occurs. Lingering disruptions may continue after the demonstration ends. Low-level confrontations between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid the protest as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the Ministry of Health building. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that a security disturbance may occur.
