Protesters gather in Panama City and other urban centers in Panama Sept. 18. Heightened security, transport and business disruptions likely.
Event
Members of the Union of Construction Workers of Panama (Sindicato Unico Nacional de Trabajadores de la Industria de la Construccion y Similares, SUNTRACS) and indigenous groups are protesting in several locations across Panama on Sept. 18. The purpose of the action is to denounce a mining contract agreement between the government and First Quantum Minerals. Demonstrators are disrupting traffic in several parts of Panama City, including along Calle 50, Via Cincuentenario, Via Ricardo J. Alfaro, and in the Coco del Mar area. Protests along the Pan American Highway have also been reported in Howard and Arraijan. Demonstrators also announced plans to gather in several municipalities of Chiriqui and Cocle provinces. Participants are likely to block roads during demonstrations.
Heightened security and significant disruptions to businesses, public transport, and public services are likely. Police may move to disperse protesters, which could prompt clashes.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Do not attempt to pass through roadblocks. Heed the instructions of security personnel. Leave the area immediately at the first sign of a security disturbance.
