Panama: Protests denouncing mining contract between the government and First Quantum Minerals likely through at least mid-October
Protests denounicng mining contract between the government and First Quantum Minerals likely across Panama through at least mid-October.
Event
Protests denouncing the mining contract between the government and First Quantum Minerals are likely to continue across Panama through at least mid-October. On Sept. 28, activists affiliated with the Union of Construction Workers of Panama (Sindicato Unico Nacional de Trabajadores de la Industria de la Construccion y Similares, SUNTRACS) staged a demonstration outside the National Assembly in opposition.
Members of several social organizations, primarily SUNTRACS, have launched multiple related demonstrations over the past few weeks, with participants often blocking thoroughfares. While the debate continues over the matter, further unrest is possible in Panama City and the rest of the country over the coming weeks.
Localized disruptions to businesses, public transport, and public services are likely near any demonstrations that materialize. Police may move to disperse protesters, which could prompt clashes.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Do not attempt to pass through roadblocks. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
