Peru: Activist groups to march in central Lima Sept. 16
Activists to hold protest march in Lima, Peru, Sept. 16. Avoid the demonstration as a precaution.
Event
Civil society organizations and labor unions opposed to a congressional investigation into the members of a government board that appoints judges plan to stage a protest march in central Lima on Sept. 16. Participants will first assemble at the Campo de Marte in the Jesus Maria District for a rally starting at 16:00 before marching to the Palace of Justice on Avenida Paseo de la Republica. The route will follow Avenida Salaverry, Avenida Faustino Sanchez Carrion, Avenida Javier Prado, and Avenida Arequipa.
The march route includes some of Lima's most important thoroughfares, and significant transport disruptions are likely throughout the city, especially in the districts of Central Lima, La Victoria, Lince, and San Isidro. Police will likely deploy to monitor the event. While the demonstration will probably remain mostly peaceful, clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out, especially after nightfall, when past protests have turned violent.
Advice
Avoid the protest as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a non-governmental building. Allow for additional transport time throughout Lima. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
