Peru: Authorities to suspend water service in southern Lima, Oct. 6.
Authorities to suspend water service throughout southern Lima, Peru, Oct. 6; water service disruptions to last up to 96 hours in some areas.
Event
Officials announced that to accommodate construction work to upgrade the water distribution system, water service will be suspended across nearly all of southern Lima beginning Oct. 6. The districts affected by the water cut will be Ate, Barranco, Chorrillos, Cieneguilla, El Agustino, Independencia, La Molina, La Victoria, Lurin, Miraflores, Rimac, San Borja, San Isidro, San Juan de Lurigancho, San Juan de Miraflores, San Luis, San Martin de Porres, Santa Anita, Santiago de Surco, Surquillo, Villa El Salvador, and Villa Maria del Triunfo. Officials state potable water distribution points will be supplied during the cut.
While the construction work is scheduled to last 10:00-22:00, officials have warned that the complete re-establishment of service will take up to 48 hours in most locations. However, areas on the periphery of Lima are likely to experience low water pressure for up to 96 hours after service is suspended.
As a result of the cut, business disruptions are likely, especially for companies that rely on large quantities of municipal water. While authorities said they would supply health centers, prisons, and fire stations with tanks of water during the cut, essential services, including healthcare facilities, could experience disruptions. The water outages could extend beyond the estimated restoration time.
Advice
Stock up on drinking water and confirm alternative water supplies for business operations if operating in the impacted areas. Use only bottled water from reputable suppliers for drinking and hygienic purposes. Water pressure and quality may be poor after service resumes; run taps for several minutes before using water. Minimize nonessential water use throughout the outage.
