A magnitude-5.0 offshore earthquake occurred near the Azores at around 19:05 Sept. 29. The epicenter was about 131 km (81 miles) southeast of Lajes das Flores. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 18 km (11 miles), and light shaking may have been felt in parts of the Azores. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; significant damage is unlikely.
