Spain: Women's rights activists to protest nationwide on Sept. 1; further protests likely through early September /update 1

Women's rights groups plan protests across Spain Sept. 1; further protests likely through early September.

Warning

Event

Further protests by women's rights activists are likely in cities across Spain through early September. Women's rights groups have called for protests in multiple cities on Sept. 1 to demand the resignation of Luis Rubiales, President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, for what activists consider his unacceptable behavior toward a female soccer player during the Women's World Cup awards ceremony. Rubiales' recent suspension by FIFA is unlikely to dissuade activists from further gatherings.

The most disruptive gatherings on Sept. 1 will likely take place at the following times and locations:

  • Barcelona: Sant Jaume Square, 19:00

  • Bilbao: Arriaga Theatre, 19:00

  • Madrid: Puerta del Sol, 19:00

  • Sevilla: Plaza Nueva, 20:00

  • Valencia: Plaza de la Virgen, 20:00

Smaller demonstrations are possible in other cities, including Malaga, Cadiz, Jaen, Almeria, Gijon, A Coruna, Motril, and Talavera de la Reina, in the coming days. Demonstrations denouncing Rubiales' actions have taken place in several cities recently, including Madrid, Barcelona, and Oviedo. Localized transport disruptions and heightened security are likely at protest sites.

Advice

Avoid protest locations as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near affected areas.
