Unionized auto workers maintain strike and protests in Michigan, Missouri and Ohio, US as of Sept. 18. Possible strike in Ontario, Canada.

Informational

Event

Auto workers, affiliated with the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, maintain their strike as of Sept. 18, as they have been unable to reach agreements with leaders of the three major US auto companies. Workers are demanding a 40 percent increase in hourly wages throughout the duration of the new contract, among other benefits. There are close to 150,000 workers affiliated with UAW, but as of Sept. 18, around 13,000 are striking in three different US locations: a General Motors assembly plant in Wentzville, Missouri; a Stellantis assembly plant in Toledo, Ohio; and a Ford plant in Wayne, Michigan. Associated protests in these areas and other auto companies' locations are likely as long as the strike continues. Additional plants may join the strike in mid and late-September.

Additionally, auto workers affiliated with the Unifor union in Canada plan to launch a strike in two locations in Ontario Sept. 19 if an agreement is not reached with company leaders. Workers would strike at a Ford Assembly plant in Oakville, and two engine plants in Windsor.

Transport disruptions are possible near protest areas. Business and supply chain disruptions are likely while the strike continues.
