Canada: Severe weather forecast over southeastern regions through at least early Oct. 26
Severe weather forecast across parts of southeastern Canada through at least early Oct. 26. Flooding and associated disruptions possible.
Severe weather is forecast across parts of southeastern Canada through at least early Oct. 26. A low-pressure system is expected to bring heavy rainfall to the region over the coming days; rainfall totals of 3-6 cm (1.2-2.4 inches) are expected over parts of eastern Nova Scotia and 6-10 cm (2.4-3.9 inches) over parts of Newfoundland. As of early Oct. 24, Environment Canada has issued red heavy rainfall warnings (the highest level on a three-tier scale) across parts of central, eastern, and southern Newfoundland and Sydney Metro and Cape Breton County and Richmond County forecast districts in eastern Nova Scotia. Grey special weather statements have been issued across the rest of the affected area in eastern Nova Scotia. Authorities may issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming hours. The heavy downpours may lead to pooling on road surfaces and elevated water levels in creeks and streams. Strong winds associated with the weather system may cause power outages and possible delays or cancelations to ferry services in the region.
Sustained heavy rainfall could trigger flooding in low-lying communities near rivers, streams, and creeks. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems. Sites downstream from large reservoirs or rivers may be subject to flash flooding after relatively short periods of intense rainfall. Landslides are possible in hilly areas, especially where heavy rain has saturated the soil.
The severe weather could contribute to transport disruptions throughout the region. Floodwaters and debris flows may render some bridges or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters.
Localized business disruptions could occur in flood-hit areas; some businesses might not operate at full capacity because of damage to facilities, possible evacuations, and some employees' inability to reach work sites.
Monitor local media for updated emergency and weather information. Seek updated information on weather and road conditions before driving or routing shipments through areas where severe weather is forecast. Do not attempt to drive through flooded areas. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
