Bangladesh: Increased security certain nationwide through late October amid various Hindu religious rituals

Increased security, disruptions likely in Bangladesh through late Oct amid various Hindu religious rituals.

Warning

Event

Increased security measures and associated disruptions are almost certain to occur across Bangladesh during the annual Durga Puja and Lakshmi Puja Hindu religious celebrations slated to occur through late October. Authorities have declared Oct. 24 a public holiday for Durga Puja; government offices and most businesses will remain closed that day. While celebrated across the country, the largest Durga Puja gatherings will most likely occur at various Hindu temples and other religious sites in the Barisal, Dhaka, Khulna, and Mymensingh divisions. Similar smaller gatherings will probably take place nationwide during the Lakshmi Puja ritual, particularly on Oct. 28.

Authorities have already increased security in certain cities ahead of the observances, especially in Dhaka. Officials have temporarily suspended bilateral trade activities with India along the Benapole-Petrapole border checkpoint in Bangladesh's Jessore District and India's North 24 Parganas District Oct. 20-25 as a precaution. Additionally, authorities will suspend trade activities between Cumilla's Bibir Bazar Land Port and India's Sonamura area in Tripura State Oct. 21-24 and Oct. 27-28. Reports indicate individual travelers will able to proceed through the impacted checkpoints. Additional cross-border closures between Bangladesh and India remain possible through late October.

Related demonstrations are possible. Potential gathering sites include religious sites, as well as prominent government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares. Officials will likely monitor any such gatherings that materialize. Clashes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Isolated communal violence is possible, particularly in the form of arson, clashes, larceny, and vandalism, typically near public religious sites. Localized transport disruptions will probably occur within the vicinity of larger religious congregations and events, as well as between any cross-border checkpoints. Business disruptions and associated shipping delays are likely as retailers close and/or curtail their hours of operation, particularly on Oct. 24.

Advice

Exercise caution near festival venues, places of worship, and other crowded event sites. If violence breaks out, depart immediately and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Confirm all business and travel appointments. Exercise increased situational awareness due to the potential for increased levels of petty crime during the festival period. Heed all official security and travel advisories.
