Further protests likely in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh State, India, following violent protests earlier Nov. 24. Avoid protests.
Elevated communal tensions and further associated protests are likely in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh State, following clashes between police and protesters in the city Nov. 24. Violence erupted after authorities attempted to carry out a site survey of a mosque that some locals claim is also the site of an older Hindu temple. Protesters denouncing the survey reportedly threw rocks at the survey team, and police intervened with teargas and baton charges to disperse the protesters, and also arrested several protesters. There are also unconfirmed reports that police opened fire, killing three protesters; if confirmed this could escalate tensions sharply.
Additional gatherings are likely in the coming days; counterdemonstrations could materialize on short notice. Protests involving opposing groups of Hindu and Muslim activists carry an elevated threat of violence and have the potential to spread to other areas. As a precaution, authorities will likely closely monitor any gatherings that occur and may use force to disperse them. Depending on operational needs, officials could impose security restrictions. Clashes between police, activists, and members of opposing groups cannot be ruled out. Disruptions to local businesses and transportation services are likely.
Sambhal is located around 158 km (99 miles) east of Delhi.
As a precaution, avoid any demonstration that materializes. Keep away from locations where security personnel appear to be deploying, and leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near gathering sites. Plan accordingly for potential localized business disruptions. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
