Terror threat level reduced to 3 in Brussels-Capital Region, Belgium, Oct. 17 following death of sole suspect.

Warning

Event

As of Oct. 17, authorities reduced the terror threat level in the Brussels-Capital Region to level 3, indicating a serious threat, following news that the alleged culprit of the Oct. 16 terror attack was shot and killed by police; the threat level was briefly raised to level 4 after the shooting. The lingering heightened security postures come amid heightened regional tensions due to the Israel-Hamas war. Authorities report that the assailant acted alone but continue searching for one individual whose connection to the attack is unclear. The suspect reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State militant group on social media.

Heightened security, including increased law enforcement deployments, armed patrols, checkpoints, and localized transport disruptions, will likely continue in the affected area and across the Brussels-Capital Region through at least Oct. 18.

Advice

Report any suspicious activity to authorities. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area or seek cover at the first sign of any security disturbance.
