Colombia: Additional protests possible in Gamarra, Cesar Department, following election-related demonstrations and rioting in town Oct. 28

Political protests possible in Gamarra, Cesar Department, Colombia, through Oct. 29 following election-related rioting in town Oct. 28.

Warning

Additional political protests are possible in Gamarra, Cesar Department, through at least Oct. 29 following demonstrations and associated rioting that destroyed the local headquarters of the National Civil Registry in an arson attack and killed a government official seeking refuge inside the building Oct. 28. The riots came in response to the removal of a mayoral candidate from the ballot for regional elections scheduled Oct. 29; officials say the candidate's links with a local public works agency amount to a disqualifying conflict of interest.

Any additional protests that materialize would likely lead to renewed clashes as well as localized transport and business disruptions. Police will likely deploy to the sites of any further protest activity.

Avoid all protests as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Allow for additional transport time. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
