As of Oct 21, heightened security measures are in place at the Embassy of Israel following a security incident there overnight Oct. 20-21. A homemade explosive device detonated approximately 30 meters from the embassy, located on Ioanni Grypari. Following the explosion, security personnel detained four suspects, searched their vehicle, and found two knives and a hammer. The blast did not cause any injuries or significant damage.

Police have implemented increased security measures around the embassy to facilitate the security operation. Road closures and movement restrictions in the surrounding area are possible, prompting localized transport disruptions.

Context

The incident comes amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, which began Oct. 7. Israeli authorities have increased security measures at diplomatic missions globally, evacuated staff from some missions in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, and requested that staff at other diplomatic missions in the MENA region stay at home.
