France: French government raises national alert score to maximum level Oct. 13

French authorities raise Vigipirate posture to maximum level from Oct. 13 after unrest and Arras attack. Tight security likely nationwide.

Warning

Event

As of Oct. 1, French officials have raised the Vigipirate posture to its maximum level, "Emergency Attack Level" (Urgence Attentat), following a knife attack in Arras that killed a teacher and wounded several others; authorities treat the knife attack as terror-related. The heightened threat level allows authorities to mobilize several thousand soldiers to assist law enforcement in providing security and facilitates state distribution of information relating to potential threats. It is unclear how long the elevated threat level may last.

Heightened security is likely in public areas such as tourist sites, public transport, large commercial centers, and places of assembly, including places of worship.

Advice

Strictly heed all instructions from authorities. Exercise additional caution in crowded public areas. Report any suspicious activity to law enforcement authorities.
