France: Heightened security persists in Arras Oct. 13 following earlier knife attack /update 1

Police are continuing their response to a knife attack at the Gambetta School in Arras on Oct. 13. Police have arrested the suspect and his brother. Despite the arrests, authorities have ordered the lockdown of schools throughout Arras and placed the RAID tactical police unit on high alert. The perpetrator was previously known to police and authorities are treating the incident as a suspected case of terrorism. One person was killed and at least two others were injured in the attack.

Heightened security and disruptions to transport and business are likely in the area over the coming hours.

Arras is located approximately 44 km (27 miles) south-southwest of Lille.

Advice

Avoid the area until police give the all-clear. Allow extra travel time to reach destinations near the school into the late afternoon of Oct. 13.
