Thousands of protesters are gathered near Saix, Tarn Department, east of Toulouse, the afternoon of Oct. 21. The action is to denounce the construction of a road between the cities of Toulouse and Castres. According to reports, protesters gathered in Saix, marched on nearby roads, and are returning to Saix. Additionally, a group broke off from the primary group of protesters, clashed with police, and set fire to a cement factory in the nearby Cambounet-sur-le-Sor area. The primary protest has remained peaceful.

Activists have stated that further protests are planned for Oct. 22. As of Oct. 21, approximately 1,600 police officers have been deployed to monitor the protests and will likely remain in place through Oct. 22, especially in light of the unrest in Cambounet-sur-le-Sor. Localized disruptions are likely through at least Oct. 22; further violence cannot be ruled out.
