Authorities have bolstered security across Mysuru, Karnataka State, and banned gatherings related to the controversial Mahisha Dasara observance Oct. 13 to deter unrest. Rationalist and Dalit groups typically lead annual events on the day to mourn the death of King Mahisha. The event also comes ahead of the 10-day Hindu festival of Dasara celebrating the death of King Mahisha from Oct. 15. Officials have prohibited proposed marches in support of and against the observance, though activists may defy these orders. Details of known banned events include:
08:00: Mysuru Member of Parliament (MP) Pratap Simha from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had called for over 5,000 people to march from central Mysuru towards the Chamundi Hill temple to oppose a Mahisha Dasara observance in the area.
09:30: Over 1,000 demonstrators had planned to hold a motorcycle procession from the Mahishasura Statue on Chamundi Hill to the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Statue at the Mysuru Town Hall via Tavarekatte Junction and Zoo Road.
In addition to the Chamundi Hill area, unannounced demonstrations may occur near prominent intersections, government buildings, and monuments in Mysuru.
Heightened security measures, including police deployment, road closures and/or diversions, and mass arrests, are certain along any march routes and gathering sites.
