Increased security and associated disruptions are highly likely in parts of New Delhi during the 9th Group of 20 (G20) Parliamentary Speakers' Summit Oct. 12-14. Foreign dignitaries from about 27 countries will attend the event and stay at various hotels across the city. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the summit on Oct. 13 at the India International Convention and Expo Center. Related events may occur at other venues in the capital, such as the Indian Parliament and Pragati Maidan.

While details of security measures for the summit have not been publicized, authorities will almost certainly maintain a heightened security posture in strategic areas of New Delhi, and particularly near official event sites, as well as along possible motorcade routes. A traffic advisory is in effect between 07:00-22:00 daily through Oct. 14 for Akbar Road, Dhulsiras Chowk, Palam Flyover, and Sardar Patel Marg, as well as around the Dhaula Kuan and Mehram Nagar areas. Localized business disruptions are possible in these areas. Additionally, flight disruptions are possible at Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) during time frames when foreign dignitaries are arriving and departing.

Although there have as yet been no specific announcements of such gatherings, activist groups could seek to draw greater international attention to their causes by staging protests and other demonstrations during the summit. Potential rally sites include prominent government buildings, public squares like the Jantar Mantar observatory, and major thoroughfares. Participation in any demonstrations will vary by organization and location. Authorities will almost certainly monitor any such rallies that materialize and may disperse overly unruly crowds. Isolated clashes between activists and police cannot be ruled out.

Exercise caution near official event sites. As a standard precaution, avoid any demonstration that materializes. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional time to reach destinations near demonstration sites, official event venues, and areas where traffic advisories are in force. Plan accordingly for possible flight disruptions at DEL on Oct. 14. Carry proper identification documents at all times. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
