The scuffles reportedly occurred in the Viale dei Mille area near the Sette Santi church ahead of a Serie A match between Fiorentina and Cagliari at the nearby Artemio Franchi Stadium. Police dispersed some of the fans using crowd-control tactics, and at least one police officer was injured amid the incident. The clashes caused damage to cars on Via dei Sette Santi; material damage was also reported outside a supermarket on Viale dei Mille.
Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence in the affected area over the coming hours. Transport and business disruptions are likely where increased security measures are in effect. Further clashes between rival soccer fans, as well as between soccer fans and police, cannot be ruled out.
