Pakistan: Political rally possible at Lahore's Liberty Chowk Oct. 15

Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf party rally possible at Liberty Chowk in Lahore, Pakistan, Oct. 15 despite legal restrictions. Exercise caution.

Warning

Event

The Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) party could hold a demonstration at Lahore's Liberty Chowk on Oct. 15 to mobilize grassroots-level support ahead of the general election slated to occur sometime in 2024. Emerging reports indicate the Deputy Commissioner's Office has legally denied the PTI from assembling at Liberty Chowk; however, PTI leaders could gather at the venue and/or other nearby locations despite the restriction. Potential gathering sites for other places include political party offices, government buildings, press clubs, sports grounds, public squares, and/or thoroughfares.

Authorities will almost certainly monitor any rallies that materialize. Officials may use force, including tear gas and baton charges, to disperse overly disruptive crowds. Isolated clashes between police and activists, as well as between rival political groups, cannot be ruled out. Demonstrators could march along or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Avoid any demonstration that materializes as a precaution. Depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional travel time near any gathering sites. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
