Panama: Protests denouncing mining contract between the government and First Quantum Minerals likely through at least late October /update 1
Protests denouncing mining contract between the government and First Quantum Minerals likely across Panama through at least late October.
Event
Protests denouncing the mining contract between the government and First Quantum Minerals will likely continue across Panama through at least late October. On Oct. 3, the government withdrew the deal to modify it and then submitted it to Congress for approval on Oct. 10. Activists voiced opposition to this maneuver and have organized a protest march in Panama City for Oct. 12; participants will assemble at Parque Porras starting at 16:00 before marching to the Presidential Palace.
Members of several social organizations, primarily Sindicato Unico Nacional de Trabajadores de la Industria de la Construccion y Similares (SUNTRACS), have launched multiple related demonstrations over the past month, with participants often blocking thoroughfares. While the debate continues over the matter, further unrest is possible in Panama City and the rest of the country over the coming weeks.
Localized disruptions to businesses, public transport, and public services are likely near any demonstrations that materialize. Police may move to disperse protesters, which could prompt clashes.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution. Do not attempt to pass through roadblocks. Heed the instructions of security personnel.
