Peru: Activists plan anti-government protests across the country Oct. 12
Activists plan anti-government protests, blockades across Peru Oct. 12. Gathering in Lima at Plaza Dos de Mayo.
Event
Activists affiliated with the National Unitary Coordinator of Struggle (Coordinadora Nacional Unitaria de Lucha, CNUL), the Ayacucho Defense Front (Frente de Defensa de Ayacucho, FREDEPA), and other organizations plan to participate in anti-government demonstrations across Peru, including Lima, on Oct. 12. Participants will demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte; FREDEPA will also denounce Ayacucho's Governor and Humanga's mayor.
In Lima, demonstrators will gather from 15:00 at Plaza Dos de Mayo and march to the Congress of the Republic building via Avenida Alfonso Ugarte Avenida Francisco Bolongnesi, and Paseo de la Republica. In other regions, protesters will also participate in marches and demonstrations at 09:00 and 17:00. Protesters will also likely block main thoroughfares.
Heightened security and associated business and transport disruptions are likely during demonstrations. Gatherings in Lima are likely to be well-attended. Clashes between protesters and police, as well as between supporters of rival political parties, are possible.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a precaution. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Do not attempt to navigate around roadblocks; wait for the police to dismantle them or take alternative routes. Reconfirm all transport reservations. Heed the instructions of security personnel. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
