Russia, Latvia: Latvian authorities indefinitely close Pededze and Vientiuli border crossing with Russia Oct. 16 /update 1

Latvia indefinitely closes Pededze and Vientiuli border crossing on Russia-Latvia border Oct. 16. Travel and freight disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Latvia closed the Pededze and Vientiuli border crossing stations on the Russia-Latvia border on Oct. 16; these are two of seven crossings on the shared border. The closure has been imposed in response to Moscow's ruling funneling all overland entry to Russia for Ukrainian passport holders via Vientiuli Crossing. Latvia previously banned persons entering the country from Belarus or Russia with Russia-registered vehicles on Sept. 12. It is unclear how long the border crossings will remain closed.

Transport disruptions, including extended crossing times, are likely at the remaining border crossing points for the duration of the closure.

Advice

Reconfirm all ground travel between Latvia and Russia. Allow additional time for passenger crossings and freight shipments via the alternate crossings on the Latvia-Belarus border.
