Striking miners allegedly holding over 540 workers hostage in mineshaft over union dispute near Springs, South Africa, as of Oct. 24.

Informational

Event

Over 540 mine workers are allegedly being held hostage by striking miners of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) in a mineshaft near Springs, Gauteng Province, as of early Oct. 24. AMCU members are alleged to have prevented miners working overnight Oct. 22-23 from exiting the shaft at the end of their shift; AMCU denies holding the workers hostage, stating they remain in the mine willingly. The motive for the presumed strike is unclear; tentative reports allege this could be an internal dispute amongst trade unions, the AMCU, and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). Management has secured an interdict against the strike.

Increased security is likely in the area, with possible localized disruptions to transport. Violence between alleged striking miners and security forces is possible should the situation not be resolved.

Advice

Avoid the area. Plan for localized transport disruptions and delays.
