Informational

Event

The National Teachers' Association has called for a rally outside the National Assembly Building in Seoul from 14:00 Oct. 14. The action is part of a series of demonstrations sparked by the suicide of a teacher July 18 following alleged pressure by students' parents. Protesters demand amendments to the Child Welfare Act to better protect teachers' rights. Organizers are expecting up to 30,000 participants.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely around the protest site. Officials may impose road closures and traffic diversions, while activists may march on or block roads. Although violence is unlikely, isolated scuffles are possible if police attempt to disperse crowds forcibly.

Advice

Avoid the protest as a precaution and to minimize travel delays. Allow additional time to reach nearby destinations, including Gimpo International Airport (GMP), which is located approximately 11km (6.8 miles) from the demonstration venue. Heed all local security and traffic advisories. Leave the area at the first sign of scuffles.
