Sweden: Government deploys increased security measures nationwide in October
Increased security measures likely across Sweden through mid-October, in response to an upsurge in violence. Disruptions possible.
Event
Increased security measures are likely nationwide through mid-October, in response to an upsurge in violence. As of Oct. 5, the Swedish government has deployed the military to support civilian police. A wave of violent crime, shootings, and explosions has been reported in recent months; authorities blame the incidents on feuds between rival organized crime syndicates. In September, 11 people were killed in multiple incidents, primarily in Stockholm and other urban centers. Organizers have canceled some government and business events as a result of the increased risk of violent crime.
Additional police and security force deployments are likely in the coming weeks. Heightened security is likely at transport hubs, including airports and railway stations. Police are likely to conduct increased traffic surveillance, and to deploy random vehicle inspections. Further disruptions to business events and conferences are possible.
Advice
Anticipate short-notice transport and business disruptions. Report any suspicious activity or objects to authorities. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel.
