Informational

Event

Further attacks targeting US and allied military forces are likely in Iraq and Syria through October. Several drone attacks targeting bases have been reported in mid-October.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) issued a statement on Oct. 18 indicating that two separate drone attacks had targeted US and Coalition forces over the past 24 hours in Iraq. In the first incident, two drones targeted Al-Asad Airbase in Anbar Governorate; one was shot down and another damaged. Several coalition force personnel were injured. In a second incident, a drone was destroyed near the Al-Harir Air Base (Erbil Governorate). There were no casualties reported.

Two additional incidents were reported in Syria on Oct. 19. Three drones reportedly targeted the Al-Tanf Base in Homs Governorate. A rocket attack also reportedly targeted US military forces in the vicinity of the Conoco oil fields in Deir-Ez-Zur Governorate. There have been no reports of casualties. US officials have not confirmed the incidents in Syria.

The incidents coincide with increased tensions in the region connected to the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. The US is an ally of Israel. Anti-Western and anti-Israeli sentiment is currently heightened. Further attempted strikes against US interests in Iraq are possible. Attacks could take various forms, including weaponized drone, mortar, or rocket attacks. Targets include US military, government, or civilian interests. Heightened security is likely near the site of any future attack.

Advice

Heed the instructions of local security forces. If an attack alert is issued in the general vicinity, stay indoors, away from windows and exterior walls. If possible, move to a ground floor or basement. Maintain contact with your country's diplomatic mission.
