Taiwan: Strike by public bus drivers underway in Taichung City as of Oct. 17
Public bus drivers on strike in Taichung City, Taiwan, Oct. 17. Public bus disruptions, increased demand for alternative transport likely.
Event
Public bus drivers employed by Sifang Passenger Transport are striking in Taichung City as of Oct. 17 over wage arrears. More than 60 drivers are participating in the work stoppage. The strike is affecting at least 13 bus routes despite partial coverage by other transport operators. Affected bus services include Green Road 4, 68, 88 and 242, 243, 245, 248, 249 and 352, 354, 355, 365 and 922.
Workers may prolong the action and/or protest peacefully until officials agree to their demands. Potential demonstration sites include bus stations and the Sifang Passenger Transport office. Organizers may call off the action at short notice if negotiations with employers and/or government officials succeed.
The action will likely result in an increased demand for alternative forms of transport, such as private-hire vehicles and trains, especially during peak hours, including to key destinations such as Taichung International Airport (RMQ). A heightened security presence and localized transport disruptions are possible around any gatherings that materialize.
