Uganda: Heightened security likely in Entebbe and Kampala areas amid anticipated return of political opposition leader to country Oct. 5

Increased security likely in Entebbe and Kampala, Uganda, amid return of opposition politician Robert Kyagulanyi and celebrations Oct. 5.

Warning

Event

Authorities will likely deploy a heightened security presence in the Entebbe and Kampala areas on Oct. 5 ahead of and amid the anticipated return of opposition politician Robert Kyagulanyi (also known as Bobi Wine) to the country following an international tour. Kyagulanyi, head of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party, is slated to arrive at Entebbe International Airport (EBB) and then travel to his residence in Magere, Wakiso District, located north of Kampala. NUP officials have called on supporters to gather at the airport and along the routes leading to Kyagulanyi's residence, including the Kampala-Entebbe Road, to celebrate his arrival. For their part, police have warned NUP supporters not to participate in any illegal processions or gatherings.

Transport and business disruptions are likely along routes from EBB to Kyagulanyi's residence, especially along the Kampala-Entebbe Road. Flight disruptions are possible at EBB on Oct. 5. Security forces may attempt to forcibly disperse gatherings of NUP supporters. Clashes between NUP supporters and police, as well as between supporters of rival political parties, cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all large gatherings as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the gatherings and any related disruptions. Allow additional time to reach EBB on Oct. 5; confirm flight reservations before leaving your accommodations. If violence breaks out, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local officials.
