Yemen, Oman: Disruptions due to Cyclonic Storm Tej ongoing across parts of eastern Yemen and western Oman as of Oct. 25

Disruptions are ongoing across parts of eastern Yemen and western Oman as of Oct. 25, following the passing of Cyclonic Storm Tej. The affected area includes parts of Al-Mahrah Governorate in Yemen and Dhofar Governorate in Oman. The center of the storm made landfall late Oct. 23 over Al-Mahrah Governorate and the system has since dissipated over eastern Yemen.

As of Oct. 25, authorities have reported one fatality and six others are missing across Al-Mahrah Governorate. At least 1,800 families across Al-Mahrah have been displaced and initial reports indicate the storm has caused widespread damage due to strong winds and flooding. The worst-affected areas include the districts of Al Ghaydah and Haswayn. Authorities in Oman have reported damaged roads, power outages, and disrupted communication networks across parts of Dhofar Governorate. Schools will remain closed in parts of Dhofar Oct. 25-26.

Protracted transport and business disruptions are almost certain in affected areas as emergency crews continue recovery efforts; utility disruptions will probably occur over the coming days and weeks. Shortages of fuel and other essential goods are likely. Driving conditions will probably be difficult on rural routes and regional highways.

Stagnant pools of water during and after flooding may increase the incidence of insect-borne and waterborne diseases, such as cholera. Exposure to raw sewage and other hazardous materials mixed with floodwaters poses a serious health threat.

Use extreme caution in low-lying areas and near streams, creeks, and other waterways due to the potential for flooding. Confirm flights before checking out of hotels or driving to the airport; clearing passenger backlogs may take several days in some locations. Prepare for possible communication disruptions, including mobile phone and internet services.

Take precautions against insect-borne and waterborne diseases in the coming days. Review contingency plans and be prepared to move quickly to shelters if evacuation orders are issued.
