DRC: Ongoing truck driver strike in Kolwezi and Tenke Fungurume in early November

Ongoing truck driver strike affecting mining exports in Kolwezi and Tenke Fungurume, DRC, in early November. Likely freight delays.

Informational

A truck drivers' strike is reportedly preventing ore export from mining areas around Kolwezi and Tenke Fungurume, Lualaba Province, in early November. Reports suggest that the action started late October; copper and cobalt truck drivers are demanding an additional USD700 per voyage as compensation for increased travel risk in the area. It is not clear when the action will end. This strike follows similar action by oil tank drivers, who halted operations in late October to demand a new price structure for petroleum products, amongst other grievances.

The strike will likely cause delays in import and export out of and from southern DRC. Drivers may organize protests near mines, border posts, or governmental buildings. Protest go-slows and road blockages along highways are also possible. Security forces could deploy to monitor any protests that materialize. Increased congestion is possible in the event of protests.

Reconfirm the status of roads before departure. In the event of heavy congestion near border posts or protests, avoid impacted routes until the situation stabilizes. Avoid all protests. Do not travel through protest roadblocks.
