Magnitude-6.0 earthquake occurs in Indonesia's Timor Region at 05:04 Nov. 2. No immediate reports of damage or injuries.
A magnitude-6.0 earthquake occurred in Indonesia's Timor Region at around 05:04 Nov. 2. The tremor occurred about 21 km (13 miles) north-northeast of Kupang at a depth of about 27 km (17 miles). Moderate shaking was in areas near the epicenter with light shaking probably experienced elsewhere in Timor Region and in Timor-Leste. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake, but some light damage is possible. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are likely over the coming days. The event has not prompted any tsunami warnings; however, the Indonesia Tsunami Service Provider advises that, according to historical data, earthquakes of this magnitude could produce tsunamis in the Indian Ocean region.
Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.
Out of an abundance of caution, consider vacating multistory buildings where shaking occurred until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Monitor and plan for aftershocks.
