Mexico: Teachers' protest planned in downtown Morelia, Michoacan State, Nov. 7

Unionized education workers to march in Morelia, Michoacan State, Mexico, from 10:00 Nov. 7 over a series of demands.

Warning

Unionized education workers, affiliated with Section XVIII of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (Coordinacion Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educacion, CNTE), plan to hold a march in downtown Morelia, Michoacan State, starting at 10:00 Nov. 7. The protest is over a series of demands, including an additional budget for public education, and the hiring of more teachers. Activists intend to gather outside the Government's Palace (Palacio de Gobierno) and march to the main offices of the state's Education Secretary. Thousands are likely to participate in the demonstration.

The march will likely prompt heightened security and transport and business disruptions, especially near government buildings and along its route. Clashes between protesters and police have occurred in similar demonstrations in the past and cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the protest as a precaution. Seek alternative routes and allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in downtown Morelia on Nov. 7.
