Mexico: Abortion rights activists stage protest march in Mexico City Sept. 28

Abortion rights activists affiliated with dozens of civil society groups have launched a protest march in Mexico City on Sept. 28. The purpose of the demonstration, which coincides with International Safe Abortion Day, is to demand legal, safe, and free abortion services across the country. Hundreds of protest participants reportedly gathered at Angel de la Independencia and then proceeded to march toward the Zocalo.

Authorities will likely maintain a heightened security presence in the vicinity of the march route to monitor the protest. Localized transport disruptions are likely. Counterdemonstrations may materialize on short notice. Clashes between protesters and police, or between ideologically opposed individuals, cannot be ruled out.
