Nigeria: Organized labor groups to stage indefinite strike in Imo State starting at 00:01 Nov. 8

Labor groups plan to stage strike in Imo State, Nigeria, beginning at 00:01 Nov. 8; electricity, fuel, and aviation disruptions possible.

Warning

Workers affiliated with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) plan to stage an indefinite strike in Imo State starting at 00:01 Nov. 8. Union leaders ordered the shutdown of electricity and fuel supplies and demanded aviation workers suspend inbound and outbound flights statewide. The purpose of the strike action is to denounce the alleged beating of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, by members of the Nigerian security forces on Nov. 1 and address salary arrears, among other issues. The labor unions further threaten to strike nationwide on Nov. 14 if their demands are unmet.

Unless averted, the action will likely cause disruptions to transport, government services, business operations, healthcare, and other sectors; airport operations may also be impacted. Related protests supporting or against the strike are likely elsewhere, particularly in urban centers near fuel-linked companies, government buildings, and NLC and TUC offices. Disruptions to the supply of electricity and fuel are possible. Clashes with security forces remain possible if participants are overly disruptive and security forces attempt to disperse them.

Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. If unable to do so, seek shelter in a secure, non-governmental building. Heed instructions from security services. Confirm all appointments and travel arrangements, including flights, until the action concludes. Charge mobile and communication devices when possible and ensure backup batteries are available. Verify that security systems are working. Stock up on fuel when possible. Do not buy fuel on the black market. Ensure fuel supplies for generators; confirm delivery agreements.
