Nigeria: Protests possible nationwide through at least late December amid elevated political tensions /update 4
Protests possible across Nigeria through at least late December amid elevated political tensions and state-level election challenges.
Protests are possible nationwide through at least late December amid election challenges and elevated political tensions. The results of the March. 18 governorship elections are currently challenged across various states. In addition, the off-cycle governorship elections held in the Bayelsa, Kogi, and Imo states on Nov. 11 have seen a low turnout and reports of rigging and violence. Some losing candidates in the three states have rejected the results and called for fresh elections.
Since the general elections, several political and civil society groups have carried out frequent gatherings across the country to denounce the results. In Kano State, officials imposed a 24-hour curfew in late September amid elevated tensions after an election tribunal nullified the governorship victory of the opposition. Other states may take similar measures to prevent or in the event of violence during future potential election appeals.
Heightened security is likely near all gatherings denouncing a court's decision and during state tribunals on ruling days, generally held in state capitals. Other possible gathering locations include electoral commission buildings. Demonstrators may march along or block roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Clashes between police and activists are possible. Clashes and other forms of violence may also occur involving rival political groups.
Remain apprised of the political situation. Avoid discussing political topics in public. Keep away from all demonstrations and any areas where security personnel are deploying. Do not drive through protest roadblocks. Leave the area at the first sign of a security disturbance. Strictly heed the instructions of local authorities.
Tensions are often elevated during national and local elections in Nigeria. Reports of fraud, including vote buying and rigging, as well as acts of political violence and intimidation, were reported during the 2023 general election cycle. Approximately 100 people died in election-related violence January-March 2023.
