Pakistan: Armed attack targeting air force base in Mianwali, Punjab, early Nov. 4

Security forces responding to armed assault targeting Air Force Base in Mianwali, Punjab, Pakistan, early Nov. 4. Tight security likely.

Warning

Security forces are responding to an armed attack at the Pakistan Air Force base in Mianwali as of the morning of Nov. 4. Initial reports indicate several armed individuals infiltrated the facility earlier the same day, damaging at least three aircraft and one fuel tanker. Military forces have reportedly neutralized three attackers and surrounded at least three more inside the base. There are conflicting accounts of military casualties. Unconfirmed sources suggest Tehrik-e-Jihad Pakistan (TJP) has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely around the air base in the coming hours as security and clearing operations continue.

Mianwali is around 120 km (75 miles) northwest of Sargodha, Punjab Province.

Avoid the area until authorities give the all-clear if operating near the impacted location. Heed official instructions. Seek alternative routes to circumvent the affected site.

Formed in February 2023, TJP is reportedly a newly established militant organization. The group claimed its first attack in Balochistan's Chaman District, though sources indicate the incident occurred due to a short circuit. In late April, the TJP claimed responsibility for a vehicle-borne explosion targeting Pakistani security forces in Lakki Marwat. However, the extent of the group's involvement remains officially unverifiable. Experts contend that TJP members are affiliates of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

The TTP previously called off a ceasefire agreement with Pakistani security forces in late November 2022. TTP leaders have since exhorted their members to carry out attacks across the nation in retaliation for security operations in several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. Additional militant attacks are possible over the coming months; the TTP typically targets Pakistani security forces via small-scale bombings, assassinations, and kidnappings in its stronghold regions. Other potential target sites include places of worship, crowded markets, transport hubs, and government and diplomatic buildings. Large attacks involving mass casualties are unlikely in major cities but cannot be ruled out.
