Venezuela: Labor and pensioners' groups to stage protest march in central Caracas, Nov. 9, to demand improved salaries and pensions

Labor activists to march in downtown Caracas, Venezuela, Nov. 9, to demand improved salaries and pensions. Increased security likely.

Warning

Activists from several labor organizations, including unions representing public workers and university professors, as well as retiree interest groups, plan to hold a march in downtown Caracas starting at 09:00 Nov. 9. The purpose of the action is to demand better salaries and pensions. Demonstrators will assemble near the Attorney General's Office in front of Parque Carabobo before marching to the Ministry of Labor near Plaza Caracas. The event may draw several thousand participants.

Heightened security is likely near government offices and along the march route; Venezuelan police have a history of moving to prevent activists from marching or blocking them from reaching their final destination. Minor clashes between protesters and police are possible.

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations in central Caracas on Nov. 9. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
