Albania: Opposition activists to demonstrate in Tirana, Dec. 21 /update 1

Opposition activists to protest at Albanian Parliament in Tirana, from 09:00 Dec. 21. Heightened security transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Opposition activists plan to protest in front of the Albanian Parliament located at 8RGF+96P, Rruga George W. Bush, Tirana 1010, from 09:00 Dec. 21. The purpose of the demonstration is to denounce efforts to prosecute former President Sali Berisha for alleged corruption. Berisha and political allies have called for participants to gather at Parliament during a vote to remove Berisha's legal immunity. It is unknown how many people will attend; however, several hundred participants, including Berisha, participated in a related demonstration on Dec. 18.

Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely in the demonstration area. While the Dec. 18 demonstration passed peacefully, clashes between protesters and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the gathering as a standard precaution. If necessary, alter travel plans to avoid the area surrounding the Parliament building. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
