Belgium: Unionized transport workers to strike and protest in Brussels Dec. 12

Unionized public transport workers to strike and protest in Brussels, Belgium, Dec. 12. Transport disruptions, heightened security likely.

Informational

Unionized transport workers employed by the Brussels Intercommunal Transport Company (STIP/MIVB), Brussels' public transport operator, plan to strike on Dec. 12. Organizers indicate that transport disruptions will last throughout the day. The strike is intended to coincide with a protest against amnesty policies. The protest will occur at Place Poelaert/Poelaertplein from 10:00. It is unclear how many demonstrators may attend; however, previous anti-amnesty protests in May 2022 drew about 20,000 participants.

Metro, tram, and bus disruptions are likely throughout the day and will likely linger into the night. Heightened security and localized transport disruptions are likely near Place Poelaert/Poelaertplein. Though unlikely, low-level confrontations between demonstrators and law enforcement officers cannot be ruled out.

Allow for delays or cancellations if planning to use metro, tram, or bus services. Avoid the demonstration area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near Place Poelaert/Poelaertplein. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disturbance may occur.
