Armed assailants killed at least 21 people and wounded several others in an attack on Nzakoundou, Lim-Pende Prefecture, Dec. 21. The attackers also set houses on fire in the village, displacing residents. While no group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, local authorities reportedly attributed the assault to rebel fighters affiliated with the 3R (Return, Reclamation, Rehabilitation) militia group.
Officials may implement heightened security measures in the area over the short term. Similar attacks are possible in the region over the coming weeks.
