Czech Republic: Authorities to maintain heightened security nationwide until Jan. 1 following shooting incident in Prague Dec. 21 /update 6

Heightened security implemented throughout Czech Republic until Jan. 1 following Dec. 21 shooting incident in Prague; disruptions likely.

Informational

The Czech Republic's Interior Ministry states security forces will maintain increased security measures nationwide until at least Jan. 1 following a mass shooting at the Charles University's Faculty of Arts in Prague on Dec. 21. Authorities previously announced heightened security measures to protect schools, universities, shopping centers, central squares, and other vulnerable locations nationwide. Since the Dec. 21 attack, police have arrested or investigated several individuals who have allegedly expressed interest in carrying out similar assaults; officials have not commented on the credibility of any of these threats.

Heightened security measures in major cities, including Prague, will likely prompt localized transport and business disruptions. Police will remain particularly sensitive to any threatening incidents that materialize, and disruptive police operations in response to such incidents are likely in the coming days. Increased security may also prompt some delays at airports and other transport hubs.

Strictly heed all instructions from authorities. Allow additional time for travel, including cross-border travel, as increased police and border checks may cause delays. Immediately depart the area at the first sign that any security disruption may occur.

Police confirmed at least 14 dead and 25 wounded as a result of the shooting at Charles University's Faculty of Arts in Jan Palach Square, Prague, Dec. 21. A further temporary security alert was raised when police responded to reports that the assailant may have concealed explosives at the site.
