Egypt: Increased security likely across country ahead of and during Coptic Christian observance of Christmas Jan. 7
Increased security likely across Egypt ahead of and during Coptic Christian observance of Christmas Jan. 7; traffic disruptions possible.
Egyptian authorities will likely increase security nationwide ahead of and during the Coptic Christian observance of Christmas Jan. 7. The Interior Ministry will likely deploy additional security forces near churches and vital state facilities leading up to the holiday observance. Security forces may also establish checkpoints on major roads near Coptic houses of worship. Localized traffic disruptions are possible.
To the extent possible, limit exposure to potential targets, such as prominent churches or large celebrations. Allow additional time for travel. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by security personnel.
Wilayat Sinai, Egypt's branch of the Islamic State (IS), has become weakened as a result of persistent military operations in the Sinai Peninsula in recent years. Despite a decline in the number of attacks, the militant group still maintains a presence in North Sinai Governorate and can launch lethal assaults against security personnel, tourists, and religious minority groups.
IS has previously targeted Coptic Christians in attacks. In November 2018, IS supporters targeted three buses carrying Coptic Christian pilgrims in the El Idwa area of Minya Governorate; the attack bore the hallmarks of a similar incident that occurred in 2017, during which IS militants opened fire on a bus carrying Coptic Christians to Saint Samuel Monastery. Both attacks followed repeated calls by IS to target Coptic Christians in Egypt. IS has also previously issued several propaganda videos and messages praising attacks on Coptic churches in Egypt and called on supporters to continue targeting Coptic Christians throughout the country.
