Ethiopia: Political group plan to protest in Addis Ababa Dec. 10

Political activists plan protest in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Dec. 10. Event banned by authorities; threat of clashes elevated.

Warning

Members of the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Party have called for protests in Addis Ababa Dec. 10. Organizers announced the route of the protest, starting from Arat Kilo Victory Monument at 10:00 and proceeding to Resmekonen Bridge, Piassa, Churchill Road, National Theatre, Mexico Square, and Lagere before reaching Meskel Square. Activists are demanding an end to conflicts in all parts of Ethiopia. Authorities have banned the event for security reasons and have arrested several protest leaders ahead of the demonstration. However, reports on social media indicate that the rally may proceed.

An increased security presence is likely across the city through Dec. 10. Security forces may attempt to disperse participants using force if the event proceeds. Transport disruptions are also possible in the vicinity of all demonstrations. Authorities may also limit or block access to mobile and internet communications amid or after periods of significant protest activity.

Avoid all planned demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate potential disruptions. Monitor for updates on possible protest locations and allow additional time for travel in central Addis Ababa Dec. 10. If clashes break out, leave the area and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Heed the instructions of local security personnel.
